About HFML-FELIX

We are a renowned national research institute, located in Nijmegen, the Netherlands. Our high-field magnets and free-electron lasers enable scientists from all over the world to expose matter to extreme conditions and drive it into previously inaccessible states and phases. We are also the only lab in the world where these two techniques can be combined, making it a unique research facility.

About us

Our experiments contribute to a number of research fields, including medicine, astronomy, material science and the energy transition. For instance by enabling the early detection of diseases, revealing the secrets of interstellar atmospheres, or finding and studying novel materials with promising new characteristics like graphene.

As an NWO research institute we are part of a large national collaboration, consisting of seven Dutch universities and NWO-I. You can read more about our partners here.

If you want to know more about our research lines and research groups, you can have a look at our research page.

Our mission

The mission of HFML-FELIX comprises three strongly intertwined
main pillars guiding our efforts:

Innovate

Develop high field magnets, infrared/THz free electron laser sources and related instrumentation.

Discover

A leading in-house research program with a broad research portfolio.

Operate

An international, open-access user facility.

Organization

As an NWO research institute, HFML-FELIX is part of a large national collaboration, consisting of Radboud University, NWO (the Dutch Research Council) and six other Dutch universities. Our team consists of professors, scientists, technical staff, supporting staff, postdocs, PhD students and students. This results in a very dynamic and innovative work culture. We have our own HFML-FELIX Board and an International Scientific Advisory Committee.
