Why work at HFML-FELIX

Innovative projects

The high-field magnets and free-electron lasers at HFML-FELIX facilitate cutting-edge research and most instruments are built in house by our technical team. We continuously work on improving and innovating. At the top of the list at this moment: a working 45 Tesla magnet and more sustainability throughout the lab.

Collaboration

We stimulate learning from and collaborating with colleagues from every department of the lab, whether you are a student, technician, researcher or member of the office team. A lot of our projects are also done in close collaboration with our external partners at other research institutes and companies.

Impactful work

Our work contributes to a number of research fields, including medicine, astronomy, material science and the energy transition. For instance by enabling the early detection of diseases, or finding and studying novel materials with promising new characteristics like graphene, awarded with a Nobelprize.

HFML-FELIX operates under the guidance of a mission and culture statement. These are made up of the goals and values that are important to us. Our mission provides direction on what we should aim to achieve, whilst the culture speaks of the ideals we wish to uphold while doing so.

The mission of HFML-FELIX comprises three strongly intertwined main pillars guiding our efforts:

  1. Innovate: develop high field magnets, infrared/THz free electron laser sources and related instrumentation.
  2. Discover: a leading in-house research program with a broad research portfolio.
  3. Operate: an international, open-access user facility.

Culture & values

Less information

We strive to be an organisation where everyone feels welcome and can be themselves. Our aim is to have a diverse and inclusive work culture where, irrespective of cultural, ethnic or religious background, gender, sexual orientation, health and age, everybody is needed.

We have regular meetings with our internal think tank, in which a group of team members from every part of our organisation comes up with new ways to improve our work culture. Anyone is welcome to join the think tank or suggest subjects for these meetings.

Our facilities offer the space to put ideas to the test. We foster an open intellectual climate, in which we inspire and challenge each other and where each individual’s qualities are able to flourish. In accordance with careful, honest and transparent scientific practice, we push the boundaries of our knowledge and will always remain eager to learn and discover more.
